Booking Through Thursday: A Meme

 Booking Through Thursday: A Meme

From BTT: I’ve seen this series of questions floating around the ‘net the last few days, and thought it looked like a good one for us!

What was the last book you bought?

Sarah’s Key.  Just ordered it last night with some leftover gift certificate money.

Name a book you have read MORE than once

Pride & Prejudice, The House of Moreys, Huckleberry Finn, Rebecca, The Boxcar Children, The Little House Books, Lord of the Flies, Little Women

Has a book ever fundamentally changed the way you see life? If yes, what was it?

I don’t think so.

How do you choose a book? eg. by cover design and summary, recommendations or reviews

The cover definitely attracts me but it’s all about the font and type size for me.  I have walked away from books that seemed spectacular because I just didn’t like the font.  This doesn’t seem to apply to books I have been sent to read but it’s almost a compulsion when I buy books.

Do you prefer Fiction or Non-Fiction?

I really like both, but I just read more fiction.  I cheat by reading a lot of fiction that is heavily based on fact. But I’m slowly balancing it all out.  I have read a lot of memoirs lately and before now I had never really done that before.

What’s more important in a novel – beautiful writing or a gripping plot?

Both are important.  If one’s not there I’ll probably have something to say about it. Beautiful writing with plot (that’s not exactly gripping) might win out.  But I’m moody.

Most loved/memorable character (character/book)

Jo March & Little Women.

Which book or books can be found on your nightstand at the moment?

The 19th Wife, Life After Genius, Wife In The North, Home Girl

What was the last book you’ve read, and when was it?

I finished Testimony on Saturday.  So good.

Have you ever given up on a book half way in?

Oh, yes.  See my thoughts on Man Gone Down. I also coudn’t finish North River.

And because I am spamming myself this morning, don’t forget to check here  so as not to miss my giveaway post!

I re-read Little Women ever few years. I love that book.

  3. Heather Kemp says:

I’m so glad you said you’ve read Lord of the Flies more than once. I absolutely love that book, and don’t think it gets a lot of play.

  4. Shana says:

Nicole, so you took the plunge and ordered Sarah’s Key. That one looks so good.

  5. Bluestocking says:

I forgot about Little House and Little Women.

  6. Beth F says:

Arghhhhh. I, too, forgot about both Little Women and the Little House books. Laura Ingalls was one of my childhood heros! Thanks for reminding me!

  7. Joanne says:

Terrific point about the font in a book. I’ve noticed that a book with strange fonts, small fonts or even margins too close to the edges effect my reading.

  8. Nicole says:

Sally~ I’m still mad at Louisa for putting Amy and Laurie together.
Kathy~ I’m do a re-read soon. I keep eyeing it on my bookshelf.
Heather~ This is actually a book that I got hooked on in school. We spent time discussing the symbols which is when I think I really got into it. Poor Piggy.
Shana~ I actually will have two copies now. I think I asked for it a long time ago, never heard about it and went on with my life and it showed up in the mail yesterday. So now I have the Amazon copy coming too. I could always return it, but I’m thinking of doing a giveaway.
Bluestocking~ I tend to take it way back when I think about favorites.
Beth~ If you like LIW, then I have a review coming soon that might be of interest. Have you ever read “On The Way Home”?
Joanne~ Font really messes with my mind. I am so finicky and easily distracted!
