Booking Through Thursday: Reading

btt button

1. Do you get to read as much as you WANT to read?

(I’m guessing #1 is an easy question for everyone?)

2. If you had (magically) more time to read–what would you read?
Something educational? Classic? Comfort Reading? Escapism? Magazines?

I don't get as much time to read as I would like.  And it's usually for good and satisfying reasons like working on my other hobbies, seeing my friends and family and getting in some exercise (ha!  ask me how much I do that).  This time of the year is especially hard because there is so much going on.  An inordinate amount of my friends (me included) are Sagittarius, so between birthday parties, birthday brunches and celebrations combined with the holiday stuff and other outside interests, my reading time gets slammed.  I have finished just one book so far this month (and it was a novella, 120 pages), and I am only half way through another.  Yikes!

If I had more time to read I would probably read more of what I read now.  I mostly read contemporary literary fiction, and non-fiction.  I have read a spate of memoirs lately, but before this year they were not my thin, and I still can't say that they are.  I have just happened to run across a good amount of them this year that have had an interesting subject matter.

  1. Thanks for visiting my blog, yours is lovely! I too have several friends and family with Birthdays at this time of year so very busy! Think it makes it even more enjoyable when you do eventually get to sit down and have a good read! Happy BTT!

  2. You could always listen to audio books while you exerise Nicole. I didn’t think I would like audiobooks but they do give me motivation to go for nice long walks. I tend to listen to different genres than I read the traditional way – that way I don’t get the two things confused.

  3. Good thought. I have tried audio books for exercising and walking (because
I do a lot of that) but they just don’t work for me. I get distracted by
whether I like the voice of the person who is reading, my mind wanders off
at things I see on the street or at the gym. Maybe if I tried horror or
suspense that would keep my attention. Don’t know. But I think it’s mainly
the way people think they have to read the stories that bugs me.

  4. Dot, I know! It is really good when I get to sit and read a few pages.
That’s what I am looking forward to this Sunday. The only day I have to

  5. With audio, it definitely helps to have a good narrator and an interesting book. I had to give up on one today because my mind kept drifting and I couldn’t keep track of the characters *or* the plot. At any rate, there’s no sense in trying to force yourself to like being read to – I’ve known a few people who it just doesn’t work for. Music is more motivating for workouts, anyway πŸ˜‰
BTW, love the name of your blog, and the Linus quote!

  6. Well sometimes I also wouldn’t had the time as there were other things bothering me. As long as you are spending your reading time for other reasons to make you happy, that doesn’t matter right? πŸ™‚
Happy reading and thank you for dropping by!!! Glad for your visit.

  7. I usually read two hours over breakfast every morning, taking my time and sitting at the sunniest spot at my neighborhood coffee shop. (It’s San Francisco…everyone has their coffee at the cafes). Then I’ll slip in some reading time when no students come for office hour. I’ll read a bit more at home in the evening since I don’t watch much TV.
I agree that regular life and social obligations get in the way of my reading as well. But I usually keep myself free from unnecessary gatherings.

  8. I get up early in the morning before work to read for two or three hours. It has come to that.
I think the geography of New York makes it hard to have few social obligations. You end up knowing people through work or other different activities and no one lives in the same place so I feel like I am always running around and meeting up for drinks, dinner or brunch to keep in touch. I have been trying to streamline and see several people at one place/time but somehow that never works out.

  9. You have a very nice blog! Thanks for visiting mine.
Luckily, my friends’ and family’s birthdays tend to concentrate on summer so I don’t have to attend those on top of Christmas planning.

  10. I hope you be able to have the times to read as you have like. I hope you able to read more by the end of December *grin* Good luck
Thanks for visitig my blog! Sorry I post it late πŸ™‚ And I wish you a Happy Holidays!

  11. Unfortunately I don;t know that it gets better with work. It hasn’t for me. I think I had more time in the summer. Everyone was on vacation so I would go out and read during lunch. And on my own vacation I read up a storm.
