The Color Purple Read-A-Long

The Color Purple

One of the great things about having a blog is that it jogs my memory about the books that I have read over the last couple of years. I still don’t remember all the nitty gritty details but if I glance at a review it triggers a fair amount of the book to come back to me.

There are probably at least a thousand books that I read prior to starting my blog and my memory of them is rather nebulous.  Either I will have read them and know that I thought they were good but still don’t remember anything that happened, I confuse the plot  with other books, or I have heard so much about a book that I think I may have read it too.  The Color Purple fits indistinctly into one of those categories, so that is why I was really excited when Heather (Age 30+…A Lifetime of Books) and I fixed upon the month of July to read this together, and hopefully with some of you as well.

This will be pretty painless.  We are just gauging interest now, and in fact on Heather’s post quite a few people are up for it, but I will let you know hen you can sign up on Heather’s blog.  She will do a mid-month post with some questions and I will write the wrap up post her on this blog, which is more my speed. I tried to do Gone With the Wind as a weekly thing, and failed miserably.  I liked Michelle’s (Literarily Speaking) thoughts on Gone With the Wind, though.

I want to also read To Kill a Mockingbird in July.  I think it would be interesting to read the both of these classic novels at roughly the same time.

    1. I have to do some digging too Lisa. It’s funny that you said that because as I was writing this post, I was thinking that I needed to find my copy of The Color Purple!

  1. I am all game for this. I borrowed my copy from the library some time back, and am yet to read. So this is a great way for me to finally read it!

  2. I will be following your posts as you reread this one. I read it in college and LOVED it. I can still remember how the book impacted me. I hope you will enjoy the reread of it.

    1. I’m not really sure that I read it in the first place, if it affected you so deeply. I know that there was so much talk/controversy over it when it first came out.

  3. I agree with you Nicole, I think it will be interested to read both books in July. I was already planning to join in and had kinda forgotten…I’m glad you posted and reminded me! I need to dig that book out and get it in July’s stack. I love Alice Walker, so I’m excited to finally be reading this book!

    1. I am really excited to do them both because I think both women were maybe writing around a similar time periods. Would love to compare their different takes on it.

  4. I’ve wanted to read this one for a long time. If I get time in July, I will definitely join you guys, but July’s sort of iffy for me – about 5 family birthdays, plus my sister’s coming back to the US from Palestine & we have an annual family reunion! Might be a bit busy…

  5. I’ve always meant to read this, and I hoped to read it this year, since it fits with some of my challenges, so I will tentatively say I’m in.

  6. I read this last year and I loved it. It had such rich cultural identities and I loved the use of language and the whole story just made me appreciate great literature all that more. I can’t wait to see your and Heather’s reactions to it! Yay!

  7. Hi Nicole,

Have you started reading yet? I’ve never read The Color Purple. I wanted to read Possessing The Secret of Joy by Alice Walker for a challenge. Didn’t remember this book could fit my color challenge. Am I too late?? I am always late. I wonder why.:) Let me know. I will have to get a copy of the book.

    1. No! you’re not too late at all. We are reading it in July so you still have plenty of time. I would love it if you joined us.

  8. I’ll have to find my copy, too. I’ll have to see what I have going on next month, but I’d like to participate as it’s been a long time since I read the book.
