I wonder if the overly positive aspects (little conflict) would bother me. I don't remember which Harry Potter it was, but one of them spends the first 100+ pages with Harry in suspense about whether he's going to be let back into Hogwarts. Really, was there any question? Spend 5 pages on the non-conflict and let him get to school. This one sounds good too, even with the a little-too-happily-ever-after moments you describe. It most likely will require the right kind of mood for reading then. I am trying to think of a big tome I wish had been shorter. My problem is that I often end up loving big books--every word of them. I wouldn't change a thing about The Way the Crow Flies, The Historian, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell or Anna Karenina which are the first few chunksters that come to mind.
