  1. I’ve been meaning to read Pelecanos for years, especially since he writes about my current home town, D.C. and its surround environs. I’ve heard many great things about this book. In fact, I almost bought it in paperback a couple of weeks ago. I hope to get to this soon.

    Great review.

Awesome review! Like J.S. Peyton, I’ve been interested in Pelecanos because he’s a “hometown boy” — and this sounds like a great read! I typically stay away from anything gritty, but the familial aspects and mystery definitely intrigue me. I’m willing to give it a shot!

  3. Wasn’t a big fan of The Night Gardener, but I would be willing to give this one a whirl :)

  4. I haven’t reviewed it yet, but I have a giveaway up for The Night Gardener at my blog The Eclectic Book Hoarder.

  5. I really liked this book, and I’m glad you did too! I saw an interview with George Pelecanos and the incident in the book is based on an event that really happened.

  6. Great review, but this is probably my least favorite Pelecanos book. Wait till you read some others!

  7. I wanted to get this one at BEA, but the line was too long and I was running out of time. It sounds great. I love books with lots of character building. And, a mystery thrown in for a bonus!

  8. Not always that into crime, but it sure sounds like he did a great job. And just for that I am curious about having a look. I should expand my reading and these sorts of books the library do plenty of

  9. Wonderful review! I read The Night Gardener by this author a couple of years ago and had a similar reaction. The author really got into the minds of the characters. Everything–and everyone–was so real. And I hear that’s not even his best book. I look forward to reading this one by him as well as some of his earlier work. (I admit I am a huge fan of The Wire.)
